Some words of wisdom for Sarah Palin

Plus ça change, plus c’est la meme chose:

“I am often made aware of the utter uselessness and folly of seeking to vindicate my character…from the simple fact that although foul aspersions can be bruited far and wide, held to the fluttering breeze by every press and rolled as sweet under every tongue, yet while the vile slander is fairly refuted and truth appears in the most incontestable manner it is permitted to lie quietly upon the shelf in slumber the sleep of death or if by chance it should get published in some obscure nook or corner of this great republic be most religiously suppressed as tho in fear that the truth should be known and believed.”

    – Brigham Young writing to (then) U.S. Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, 1855 (quoted in 40 Ways to Look at Brigham Young, Orton & Slaughter, Deseret Book, 2008)

Doesn’t look as though the interwebs have changed things all that much.  ..bruce w..

    Video o’ the day

OK, after watching this video, I’m having to really rethink my support for Sarah Palin (and the old guy):

Palin (and McCain) images of the day

[UPDATED 2004 MDT] And here’s a great political cartoon posted over at Gateway Pundit:

Finally, I actually really like this photo of John McCain (in an Addams Family sort of way):

Apparently, this photo was taken by a (Democratic) photographer in hopes of getting The Atlantic to use it on its cover. [UPDATED 09/14/08 1618 MDT] Gerard Van der Leun has more on the whole issue. In the meantime, Ace (of Spades) has photoshopped the above image. Heh.  ..bruce w..

Sarah Palin images of the day [updated]

Both of these via Rachel Lucas (though hat tip to The Line is Here for pointing me over there):

    Duck, cover, and roll!

And another take on the same photo:

    Don't mess with the governor!

And, shameless stealing from S. Weasel again:

Sarah Palin at the October 2nd Debate:

Willie Brown weighs in on Sarah Palin

For those of you who did not live in California at some point during the last 25 years or so, you probably don’t know who Willie Brown is. He is probably the most colorful political figure of that quarter century, beating out Jerry Brown and even the Terminator himself. Willie is about as staunch a Democrat as you could find; the fact that he served both 15 years as Speaker of the California State Assembly and then as the first (and to date only) black Mayor of San Francisco should tell you all you need to know about that. But he’s always had a streak of intellectual honesty about him — witness his efforts to get rid of the homeless in San Francisco — and he’s certainly never dull.

So now, Willie has weighed in on Sarah, and he’s saying the things that few on the Left want to admit, at least not publicly:

The Democrats are in trouble. Sarah Palin has totally changed the dynamics of this campaign.

    Period.

Palin’s speech to the GOP National Convention on Wednesday has set it up so that the Republicans are now on offense and Democrats are on defense. And we don’t do well on defense.

Suddenly, Palin and John McCain are the mavericks and Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the status quo, in a year when you don’t want to be seen as defending the status quo.

From taxes to oil drilling, Democrats are now going to have to start explaining their positions.

Whenever you start having to explain things, you’re on defense.

I actually went back and watched Palin’s speech a second time. I didn’t go to sleep until 1:30 a.m. I had to make sure I got the lines right.

Her timing was exquisite. She didn’t linger with applause, but instead launched into line after line of attack, slipping the knives in with every smile and joke.

And she delivered it like she was just BS-ing on the street with the meter maid.

She didn’t have to prove she was “of the people.” She really is the people. . . .

Read the whole thing (including all the non-Sarah stuff; his final ‘dining tip in Oakland’ is about as un-PC as you can get). Hat tip to the Moderate Voice via Instapundit.  ..bruce w..

The best quote on Palin’s speech last night…

…comes from someone who doesn’t think highly of her:

It was that good. No, she’s not qualified, and the substance was thin, but my God — that was perhaps the greatest bit of political theatre I have ever witnessed. Her critics in the media and in the opposition may regret having piled on quite so enthusiastically, and with so little heed for who they hurt — or angered. Watching the tumultuous, ecstatic reaction in the hall, I was reminded of the famous words of the Admiral Yamamoto after Pearl Harbour: “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant, and fill him with a terrible resolve.”

“US Weekly” editor gets shredded by Megyn Kelly

US Magazine of course had its infamous cover story this week on Sarah Palin, titled “Babies, Lies, and Scandal”. Bradley Jacobs, the senior editor for US Weekly, has his head handed to him by Megyn Kelly at Fox News by virtue of the fact that she actually read the story:
