It’s time for action. Oil is at $130/barrel, gasoline is at $4/gallon. We have vast reserves that are untapped.

Newt Gingrich has coined the phrase “Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less.” and wants us to sign a petition. I like the phrase, but a petition is not going to do it. Here’s my suggestion: send a quart (or case!) of oil to anyone who is blocking domestic exploration and production. The nice thing: you can do it via Amazon.com. (No, I’m not an Amazon shill, and I don’t get any money if you follow that link. Just trying to make this easy.)

House Subcommittee Rejects Plan to Open U.S. Waters to More Oil Exploration

WASHINGTON — A House subcommittee on Wednesday rejected a Republican-led effort to open up more U.S. coastal waters to oil exploration.

Salazar Blocks BLM Director Over Colorado Drilling

RIFLE, Colo. (AP) — Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar on Wednesday officially blocked the confirmation of President Bush’s nominee to head the Bureau of Land Management. He vowed to relent only when Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne pledges that the department’s conflict with the state of Colorado over energy development won’t end in a “train wreck.”

And, of course, neither John McCain nor Barack Obama have given us much hope to date in this regard, either.

I’d recommend focusing on Rep. Norman Dicks (D-WA, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Interior and the Environment) unless one of the other committee members happens to be your rep.

I’ve just sent Rep. Dicks a case of motor oil with the gift message: “Drill here, drill now. Stop blocking domestic oil exploration.” [06/18/08: According to UPS, the case of oil was delivered at 10 am EDT, Wednesday, 06/18/08.]
