More Wallpaper - Arctic Sunsets

I recently took a wonderful trip to Scotland just before Christmas to visit relatives. It was a tremendous visit, and it was great to see everyone again.

On the way home, I had the pleasure of sitting at a east facing window seat as we flew back to the US, with our route taking us north of the Arctic circle near Iceland and Greenland. Knowing how folks are always keen to have new desktop images and wallpapers, a few images captured from that flight after the jump - more images from Scotland both on the ground and from altitude to come!

Benazir Bhutto Killed In Coordinated Attack

Bhutto.jpg It’s a sad day for the forces of moderation and cooperation in the Muslim world. Early this morning US Time, former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed a short time after a political rally.

Reports from the scene state that multiple shots where fired, and one person detonated an explosive vest at the time of the attack. Mrs Bhutto had met with Afgan leader Hamid Karzai earlier in the day and was en route to another engagement. The attack happened just after 6PM local time in Pakistan after addressing a rally in Rawalpindi.

The shots were fired as Mrs Bhutto was moving to get into her transport to travel away from the rally. It seems the attackers picked the natural choke point, when she would be separated from the crowd and easier to target, to strike.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital, and was still alive when she was taken into the emergency room (according to reports) but doctors were unable to stabilize her.

Today’s events are grim portents for violent political struggle in the only Islamic country that has a confirmed nuclear capability. President Musharraf has been the military dictator of that country for many years, and the first open or quasi open elections were slated for January. Mrs Bhutto was a leading candidate to become Prime Minister, and was a natural to begin the transition towards a democracy.

Many in the press and political spheres will naturally try to finger Musharraf as being behind this attack, but it is not in his best interest to see Mrs Bhutto dead. Musharraf is a master of political calculus, and there is a very close to zero chance he would make a mistake like this. Indeed he had repeatedly warned Mrs Bhutto that the situation in Pakistan was unstable enough that her safety was a grave concern to him. Today that concern came to reality.

More likely than not this will eventually be traced back the the Pakistani intelligence agency, the ISI, and will further expose their ties to the Taliban and Al Queda. In the next few days, as this horrible event is investigated, we are likely to find that the attackers (yes, plural) were the pointy end of a larger network, quite possibly Al Queda itself.

Al Queda has been struggling the last several years to remain relevant. They have been unable to carry out any attack or impact world politics to any degree since the Madrid bombings threw the election to the Socialists in Spain who quickly surrendered. Make no mistake, a Bhutto election was a threat to Al Queda. She would have been empowered to begin draining the swamp that is the ISI and exposing (complete with jail time, torture and executions) the Al Queda / Taliban operatives who work there. Faced with that future, most likely people connected to these groups decided to kill her instead.

The world is more dangerous as a result of today’s events.

A white Christmas, indeed

Forget that last posting; like almost every other predicted snowfall this winter, the actual accumulation was much less than predicted and didn’t have a lot of impact.

Unlike today.

As late as yesterday morning, the local weatherpeople were calling for “flurries” here in the front range (the plains and foothills east of the Rockies), and even that they were giving only a 50% chance of happening.

As I type this on Christmas afternoon, the wind chill outside is -14 deg F. Snow has been falling and blowing ever since I woke up at 7 am this morning. I’ve had to use the snow blower on the driveway twice; first on just the upper portion this morning to let our daughter, son-in-law, and kids make it up the rest of the driveway; second on the entire driveway this afternoon to let the same daughter and son-in-law leave. This is easily the single largest snowstorm we’ve had this fall/winter to date, though of course still nothing like the blizzard we had just before Christmas last year. My guess is that we’ll have gotten about 6″ of snow by the time this ends late tonight.

A bit more than a flurry, I’d say. But we’re safe, warm, and full of food (in spite of my burning all three of my pies). Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night! ..bruce w..

[UPDATED 12/27/07 - 2148 MST] As it turned out, Denver broke the all-time record for snowfall on Christmas Day — 7.8″.  And we got another several inches today (in fact, snow is still falling as I type this). It’ll be a busy morning with the snow blower tomorrow.  ..bfw..

Here comes the snow again…

A year ago today, I was blogging during the Great Denver Blizzard — which, as it turned out, was just the first of a series of weekly snowstorms that kept the ground covered with snow for two months straight (and missed by just a few days setting an all-time record here in Denver).

Welcome to Snow Storm Redux. After being clear and sunny this morning, clouds started moving in around noon, and snow started falling around 1 pm — several hours earlier than all the local weatherpeople were predicting even this morning. More telling, the wind outside is blowing pretty steadily at 20 to 30 MPH; the wind chill factor is down to around 0 deg F (actual temp is 26 deg F). We shouldn’t get anywhere near the snowfall we got a year ago (knock wood, fingers crossed) — but I think we may end up getting more than the aforementioned weathercasters said we might (2-5″).

We shall see.  ..bruce w..

Tales of the Strange

Or, rather, images of the strange. Quick quiz: what is this thing?

70 deg N, 40 deg W (Greenland)

I don’t know either, but if you open up Google Earth (4.2 beta), scroll over to the middle of Greenland (70 deg N, 40 deg W), and then start zooming in, this is what you’ll find. I have to think it’s a data artifact (deliberate or accidental) of some kind, since this ‘thing’ is about 50 miles long.

Anyone have a clue? Anyone?
